Afrika Design tailor business
I requested the owner (Juma) of Afrika design to make me a slim fit suit and gave him an existing suit with the express ask, that it simply be copied as is (size, design etc.). The estimated time was 2-3 weeks pending finding the material. We agreed that the material from of a shop suit would not be 100% the same to his but would get a close as possible and have a similar look and feel. A deposit of R1500 was paid (26/09/2022) against the total of R3000, balance on suit being completed and acceptable to matching my ‘old’ suit. It took months of waiting (and checking in with him) and eventually the suit was deemed ready. I went to view it (Juma not at his premises then) and it was nothing like the suit I asked to be copied. The suit was not slim fit, material was very different feel (stiff) to existing suit and the design was different. In the end I was told to meet him at Fabric Warehouse to show me another Black material that might work. It seemed fine and the suit then took weeks after that to complete. I agreed to collect the suit, try it at home (he has no changing facilities at his business) and if happy, I would pay the balance. This was 22 December 2022 ! that I got the suit. Needless to say, the suit was wrong in all directions. Not slim fit, design not a copy of my old suit, pants very off the mark in fitting and jacket was oversized. This was NOT a suit that needed slight adjusting (as if it was close to fitting). I told Juma I was returning the suit and the deposit to be refunded. Enough time had been wasted and it was clear that he could not produce a suit from an existing one on hand. He agreed to take back the suit (whatsapp message confirms) and I would get the deposit back. I dropped the suit off (28/12) at Fabric World as agreed and expected the deposit back in a few days max. This did not happen and when I followed up, he mumbled about waiting for someone to buy the suit, then he would give my deposit back. This was NOT the agreement, the selling of the suit was not declared in any whatsapp message. The agreement was changed to delay payment by him. To fast forward, endless calls and messages were met with ‘need more time’, now I have an Affidavit drawn up by an Advocate, I am taking to Wynberg Police to claim the theft of R1500. He has had since December 2022 to pay back R1500, yet goes silent or gives an excuse about ‘waiting for the man to come buy the suit’. I made it very clear, that who and when he sells the suit has NOTHING to do with me and told him in no uncertain way, to drop that mindless statement. Theft is theft. Stay away from this business.
