Two Weekends Without My Salary – African Bank's Negligence

**Only one star because I can't give zero.

It’s now been 7 days since my salary was paid into my African Bank account, only for it to be rejected due to a KYC block I was never informed about. I visited their Braamfontein branch in April 2025 to ensure the account was active. I was told it was. Based on that, I switched my salary to them.

On 27 June, my salary was paid but never reflected. Only after escalating and visiting the Campus Square branch, was I told my account had been blocked a month prior, yet no notification was sent via SMS, email or call. I received no real help or urgency — only scripted responses and an empty apology.

Despite the chaos, I did what was asked: submitted another salary switch form. But now, due to processing timelines, HR has confirmed finance will only start reprocessing payments on Monday, 8 July. That means two weekends without my salary. Two weekends of emotional and financial trauma — all caused by African Bank’s failure to communicate a basic account status.

I am a single mother. This crisis has affected:

* My nanny, who couldn’t send money to her children or contribute to her stokvel * My landlady, who missed a bond repayment and incurred interest * My mother, who had to cover my loan repayment * My sister, who had to hustle to cover my niece’s cellphone contract * My stokvel, who didn’t get their monthly repayment * My dog groomers, my healthcare arrangements, subscriptions, and more

I’ve missed payments. My name has been tarnished. My mental health has suffered. I’ve barely eaten or slept. I’ve now formally complained to the National Financial Ombud.

I did everything right — and African Bank still failed me. They should not be allowed to treat people like this. We are not account numbers. We are human beings. And African Bank needs to be held accountable for the real-life harm they cause through negligence and poor communication.
