Stay away from African Bank

African Bank is using my personal information without my consent. Being an ABSA client myself I am used to appalling service from the banking industry, but using my information without my consent crosses a line.

After my earlier complaint about African Bank using my personal information without my consent, I get a phone call from African Bank who wants to resolve my query. I ask where they obtained my information. I am then informed that they don't know where they obtained my information and will need to escalate the matter and do an investigation. I am then asked for my IDENTITY NUMBER so that they can log my query. The very essence of my complaint is that African Bank is in possession of personal information which I did not provide and then they have the audacity to ask me for FURTHER PERSONAL INFORMATION. How can a bank phone consumers and ask for their Identity numbers? I am sure that they would also like my account- and pin number to use as they deem fit?

African Bank phoned me this morning to give me feedback regarding the use of my personal information and where they obtained it from. African Bank advised that they obtained my email address from TransUnion and that my e-mail address was part of a batch of e-mail addresses that TransUnion sent to them (as they do on a monthly basis). I asked for more information and for contact details of the person who provide these lists. I also asked on what or whose authority African Bank proceeded to use my information. African Bank could not provide me with any further information and advised that I speak to TransUnion and ask them on what authority my e-mail address was used and disclosed. I then proceeded to phone TransUnion, who denied ever giving my information to African Bank. TransUnion says that they are not allowed to do this and they are not aware of these lists of email addresses being sent to African Bank on a monthly basis. They suggested that I ask African Bank for proof that they obtained my information from TransUnion and to report this to the National Credit Regulator. So at this point African Bank is still using my email address without my consent and they are unable to provide me with proof of where they obtained it, or any sort of document indicating that I consented to the use of my information. I need an explanation and I need to be reimbursed for the time and effort spent to protect my personal information, which should be protected by legislation.
