Ongoing Harassment Calls from African Bank – Despite No Outstanding Debit Check Mandate
I’m beyond frustrated with African Bank’s repeated and unnecessary calls about a so-called “outstanding debit check mandate.”
In July 2025, I app**** for a credit card limit increase, which was declined. Since then, I’ve received monthly calls claiming my debit check mandate expired in August 2025. I went to the Potchefstroom (North West) branch, where the staff phoned head office — and it was confirmed multiple times that there is nothing outstanding on my account.
Even after asking that a note be placed on my profile, the calls continue. This is now harassment and a violation of South African law, including:
Section 45 of the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act (ECTA) – prohibits persistent unwanted contact.
Section 69 of the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) – forbids repeated direct marketing or contact after opting out.
Section 40 of the Consumer Protection Act (CPA) – prohibits harassment, undue pressure, or coercive conduct by suppliers.
I am demanding that African Bank stop contacting me immediately and confirm in writing that this matter has been resolved. If the harassment continues, I will report the bank to the National Consumer Commission (NCC) and the Information Regulator of South Africa.
This behavior is unacceptable and ********. Do your work properly and stop harassing customers!
