Interest rates makes it impossible to settle AB loan

I have a loan from African Bank. Unfortunately, I was married and my then husband ran up a large amount of debt in my name. We got divorced and as he was not a South African citizen, he left without a trace, taking all our savings with him and not being liable for any repayments. I have been under debt review for a while, but my debt counsellor advised me that this loan was given recklessly as my income was not sufficient to make full instalments monthly. They promised to challenge this in court but nothing came from that. I have since cancelled the debt review. My monthly repayments just about convers the interest. When I took out the loan I was desperate but in hindsight I feel that charging customers 34% interest per annum is ridiculous. I would like to know what my legal rights are as a consumer and what happens should I not be able to make payments on this account anymore.
