African Bank is still a bad Service provider with no respect for Professionalism and Regulatory Principles!!!!
The level of harassment I have endured from African Bank over the past few months is unacceptable. One would think that the principles of Treating Customers Fairly (TCF) apply to every other financial institution except them.
What makes the situation even worse is the extremely unprofessional and rude behaviour displayed by some of their consultants, including individuals such as Sydney Molefe. There seems to be a complete lack of compassion or understanding of the frustration their actions cause customers.
On 24 November 2025, I contacted African Bank because I was experiencing financial constraints and informed them that I would not be able to pay the full instalment at that time. The consultant I spoke to reminded me about an offer to restructure my credit card account, which would remove all arrears and provide a more manageable repayment structure. This sounded like a reasonable opportunity to remediate my account, so I agreed.
I made a R600 payment, and the consultant even mentioned that had I contacted them before making that payment, it might not have been necessary since the new contract would take effect. We then agreed on a new instalment of R1500 per month.
However, things quickly became problematic:
December 2025: A debit order of R2000 went off instead of the agreed R1500. I initially overlooked it.
January 2026: Before my next debit order date, I received a call stating that my account was in arrears. This made no sense considering they had debited more than the agreed amount.
After raising the issue, the consultant investigated and refunded R500, confirming it had been an error on their side.
20 January 2026: The debit order of R1500 went through as agreed after they supposedly corrected the account.
Shortly thereafter, I received SMS notifications claiming my account was in arrears again. When I queried this via WhatsApp, I was told to ignore the message as it was an error.
February 2026: Another payment of R1500 was made.
Despite honouring the agreement and making the agreed payments, I am now being harassed daily by African Bank consultants demanding payment for arrears that appear to have been created by their own administrative errors.
I eventually spoke to another consultant who acknowledged that the account had previously been corrected and advised that the matter would be escalated for resolution. Yet, while waiting for feedback, the harassment calls resumed immediately.
This raises serious concerns for me:
How exactly is my account being recorded with TransUnion?
Why is there such a lack of coordination and professionalism within African Bank?
Why are customers being harassed for arrears that appear to be the result of the bank’s own system or administrative errors?
South Africans are already under immense financial pressure. Many people face financial stress and even depression, and being harassed daily by a bank while actively trying to honour your commitments is both unacceptable and irresponsible.
African Bank needs to seriously reconsider how it treats its customers. Respect, professionalism, and adherence to regulatory principles are not optional they are obligations.
