African Bank bullies me into paying cancellation fee

A few years back I was in need of a personal loan. I approached African Bank, and was offered a loan of R6000 and a credit card of R4000. I needed R10,000.00 and so I decided to take what was on offer.

On 23 April, I went into their Cape Gate branch with the intention to settle what was owed in full, and to close the accounts.

I payed, and instructed the consultant to cancel the credit card. I even went as far as breaking it into pieces and asked him to throw it away for me.

African bank then went forth and debited another payment (R300) off my account for the credit card THAT I ALREADY PAYED UP AND CANCELLED a week ago.

I went onto my online banking and reversed the payment. Since then, African Bank has sent me threatining sms's saying that I was in arrears with my payment and that it would reflect negatively on my credit record if I did not rectify urgently.

I Went into their Cape Gate branch 13/6/2016. The friendly lady that assisted me put me onto the call centre, as when I explained my dillema, she also found it odd.

Spoke to a very rude woman called Princess. She was unhelpfull and just said "sorry, you must pay". I requested to speak to her supervisor in the hope that I could speak to someone with actual problem solving s****s, however when I asked to be put through, she hung up.

This all happened while I was in the branch. I phoned again, this time speaking to another lady (cant recall her name). This lady then tells me that they have no record of anybody telling them that the credit card needed to be cancelled. I explained to her that I did give instruction for this to happen, and that I could not be held responcible if an African Bank employee did not follow through on a customer's instruction.

So according to her, they did not receive an instruction to cancel the credit card. Here is the funny part, a few days after they attempted to debit me with R300, I received a credit from them with the value of R220. Why would they credit me?

Here's my problem now. I payed up in full. They tried to take R300 from me, which I reversed (incurring bank charges for myself). Then they payed R220 to me, which I am prepared to pay back to them, BUT I was told that the account would only be closed if I would pay them a total amount of about R400. The lady could not tell me what it was for.

The difference between R220 and R400 is not massive, but I cannot stand to be bul**** like this. I am theone who will sit with a spoilt credit record due to their incompetence.

Be warned consumers, these guys are *****!
