Join Affinity Health at Your Own Risk
I’m writing this because I care about you my brothers and sisters who might be considering Affinity Health. Please, join them at your own risk.
Here’s my story: About two months ago, I was diagnosed with a hernia in the groin. The surgeon confirmed it, and I was given quotes from two hospitals. The total bill, including hospital, surgeon, and anaesthetist, was just over R90,000.
When I submitted this to Affinity Health, they told me they would only cover R33,000 (about a third). That meant I had to pay R66,000 out of my own pocket. Now, let’s be honest, if I had access to R66k, would I even be with Affinity Health in the first place?
They market themselves as the “affordable alternative” for people who can’t afford Discovery and the other big medical aids. But in reality, they are gambling with our lives. And mind you, I’m on Gold membership, their best plan.
Because I simply couldn’t afford the R66k, I started searching on my own for alternatives. I found a surgeon willing to do the operation at a day hospital instead of overnight, which brought the cost down to R60,000. I thought: “Great, Affinity will still pay their R33k, and I’ll just cover the balance.”
But when I sent in these new quotes, Affinity came back and said they would now only cover R25,000, because it was at a day hospital. They called it “policy.”
So instead of helping me, they pushed me into even more financial stress, while I spent over a month trying to find a solution, thank God hernia isn’t immediately life-threatening. Imagine it was something way serious I was going through?
The truth is, being with Affinity Health is as good as having no medical cover at all. If they only pay a third of your bill, where do they expect you to get the rest? Don’t let their adverts or the positive reviews fool you, this is my real experience. Don’t be like me, who only found out about this when I was now in the situation. You are not covered my people.
Thank you for sharing your experience with us.
