Online shopping returns - what a joke!!!

This is a joke, I bought a pair of slides online as a gift a gift and now it’s not possible to exchange it for a bigger size because none of the stores stock it. So now I need to return the item and re order it and lose the discount I received when buying them. Absolutely terrible customer service and the Call center is not helpful at all.
