Unauthorised assess to locked suitcase
Hi<br> <br> I flew Kulula from Durban to OR Tambo last night. I did not check my bag when I picked it up from the conveyor belt and only notice when I arrived home that the lock was missing and that my bag had been rummaged through. I had a container inside the bag that had been opened and the contents were lying inside the bag. Fortunately i did not have any valuables inside the bag that were of interest to the perpetrators as it seems that nothing is missing. But it is really disturbing that the baggage handlers have tools available to destroy locks. <br> Please advise how passengers can secure their personal belongings when flying, as locking the suitcases is no longer an effective deterrent.

It is with regret that we note this incident.
Airports Company South Africa's core responsibility is the facilitation of passengers through the airport as well as infrastructure provision. It is regrettable that baggage pilferage happens at all and it is something we take very seriously as a community (airport authority, airlines, ground handling companies, the police etc.). It is also something that we work on continuously with all stakeholders.
Under an Airport Security Programme (ASP), which is in line with civil aviation authority (CAA) regulations, in order for an airline to operate at our airports, they need to conform to the CAA approved ASP in the following regard;
-Legal Authority: The authority for security control of hold baggage is the responsibility of relevant airline on which aircraft passengers and their hold baggage are traveling.
-Protection of Hold Baggage: This is an airline responsibility and procedures are detailed in the air carrier's security program.
Please report this to the airline for investigation purposes:
