Archaic scanning system at Cape Town Airport an embarrassment
This review relates to my experience today 29 march 2024 returning to Cape Town International Airport from Munich which was everything an airport should not be if it wants to compete on the world market. Firstly, upon arrival the sky bridge was late arriving at the plane. At that time of the morning there was only one international flight arriving, and it was on schedule, which begs the question why the bridge could not be on time as well. Secondly, passport control was slow with not enough staff to clear arriving guests efficiently. Also, the e gates were not being used to clear SA citizens fast and effectively, although they appeared to be on. I do not understand why we have e gates if they are not being used, it slows the whole process down tremendously if returning SA citizens must also be cleared through customs by the already minimal staff. My biggest gripe however was the fact that there was a "new" manual baggage scanner in the baggage claim hall, through which all arriving passengers had to pass their luggage before being allowed to leave the baggage claim area. I have personally never seen such an archaic machine in any of the South African airport before, and fail to see the need to introduce it now. If there is a need to scan inbound baggage then do it as it comes off the plane before it goes onto the baggage carousel. To tell the truth, I was embarrassed as a South African citizen that we suddenly feel the need to put arriving international passengers through such a **** show. With only one scanning machine and one operator I shudder to think just how bad it could get if there is more than one flight arriving at the same time. Come on ACSA, get your act together and stop behaving like a company straight from the dark ages.
