Airport toilets are offices where tourists are relieved of cash

On a recent flight to New York I went into the toilets at OR Tambo. I have become accustomed to the janitor that has become a permanent feature in our South African airport toilets. The enthusiastic greeting of 'welcome to my office', was initially funny but of late these guys have become pushy and almost insistent that they be tipped. This trip the janitor blocked the doorway and held out his hand with a few notes in it before I could exit. I politely asked him if he worked for airports company and if this was allowed. He backed off rudely and stepped aside staring at me intently.

It is time for begging and entitlement to stop in this country. Airports Company has done nothing to stop this practice. What do visitors to our country think of us if their first experience in our country is that of being relieved of their cash while trying to relieve themselves of sickening airline meals.

Please stop this practice! South Africans are not beggars
