The eating cashier.
As someone who comes from retail, I can confirm that some clients can be a real piece of work. With this being said, a cashier should have a level of tenacity that will be tested on a daily basis. I have personally endured long hours behind a till and I have experienced what being underpaid can do to the human spirit. But this is no reason for bad customer service. On the 20th of May 2018 I was in Ackermans Kraaifontein, while standing in a very short queue (which I do appreciate as this indicates productivity), the cashier screams “next” which I assumed meant it’s now my turn to be served. I walk to her till and she walks off without saying a word, mind you she hasn’t greeted nor provided any form of explanation as to why, she is just walking off. Now I’m waiting, she eventually gets back with no apology or a good morning or even half a smile, in turn she in fact was enjoying a watermelon chappie bubblegum, reason why I know this is because she went and blew one round bubble which eventually burst as she was serving me. Her colleague too was engulfing a pack of popcorn while she was serving her respective customer, she on her turn popped two in her mouth while requesting his ID. Never in my life have I ever been more disgusted at what I had seen, especially in a company that holds up such a high regard for customer service. Now back to KAYLA my cashier. She then takes the jacket from the counter scans it take the money which was also on the counter and gives my change and till slip. This was all done while eating and not saying a word or cracking a smile. Understand me when I say this, had it not been for the fact that my nephew needed that jacket we had come to buy, I would have left it or even worse thrown it in that poor child’s face. I do not blame her for her etiquette as I feel management should train their staff properly before allowing them to be the face of such a prestigious establishment.
