Ackermans markdown policy

I found items on Markdown in the isle & went to the till to pay then the lady said that the items were not available in their system so she can't sell them to me..I asked how was that possible she proceeded to tell me that the reason was that the items have been in the store for too long so they will be taking them to charity.. I just wanted to find out how true is that
