Unpleasant service at ABSA Malmesbury

On Saturday 11 May I visited my local ABSA bank in Malmesbury to deposit R 3000.00 cash into my cheque account. It has been quite some time since I have needed to go into a bank as I do my banking electronically. I came out of the bank 30 Minutes later utterly frustrated and wishing that I never had the misfortune of ever having to visit this bank again. After waiting about twenty minutes to be served I was told that I should rather deposit the money at the ATM outside. It would apparently be a cheaper option regarding bank charges. I rep**** that I did not mind paying whatever bank charges would apply but that I was now inside the bank and would prefer to make the deposit at the teller. I was then told by the teller that she could not accept my money for deposit and that I had to use the ATM. I insisted that she accept the deposit. She absolutely refused to accept it and called the manager, Melanie Williams. Ms Williams informed me that bank policy was that I should deposit cash less than R 10 000.00 at the ATM outside. I told her that I found this unacceptable and insisted that she give the teller permission to accept my deposit. (Clearly, she could do this) She absolutely refused. I asked for her name. She refused to give me her name and said I could mention in any complaint that I had spoken to the manager. I had to insist before she did in fact give me her name. I regard this as shocking service. Firstly, why should a bank employee hesitate to provide a client with her/his name? Why do employees of this bank not wear nametags clearly identifying them? Secondly, why should the bank flatly refuse to accept a cash deposit at the teller despite my willingness to pay whatever bank charges should apply? I can understand wanting to encourage the use of the ATM instead of the teller so that fewer staff need to be employed and to reduce waiting times in the bank. Flatly refusing to accept a cash deposit is unacceptable. There was a queue at the ATM and the waiting time at the teller would be shorter. I have had my salary paid into my ABSA account for over thirty years. I have a credit card and home loan with this bank, and this is how they treat me? My pension is currently paid into my ABSA account, and I have a considerable investment with this bank. This means that ABSA receives a few hundred rand per month in bank charges from me, but they simply will not take my deposit at the teller on the very rare occasion that I should need this service. I constantly get e mails from ABSA telling me how wise I am to invest with them and assuring me that they always take good care of their clients, but they will not take my money at the teller? I am now seriously considering taking my business to a different bank. I am aware that all banks seek to encourage clients to use ATM’s rather than going into the bank but I should hope that I would at least get a more sympathetic hearing from theirs staff than I received from Ms Williams. I was simply dismissed and treated like a stupid old man by Ms Williams.
