Unfair discontinuation of funeral cover

I have been paying for a funeral cover for both my parents since 2007 until my mom passed away on 14 January 2001 of which my mom was the main member and I the beneficiary. My mom's portion was paid up. To my surprise Absa Life (Zimele) now claims that their terms and conditions of the policy states that when the main passes away, the policy is automatically cancelled. My query is that the premium paid for both was R130 and not R70 as it clearly states in the contract (MAIN MEMBER AND SPOUSE). At no point was my mom nor I made aware that the terms and conditions have changed. My mom passed away and I called to check what the process is for continuation for my Dad as they were both covered and the premium was for both of them and to my dismay I was informed that the cover discontinues as the main member is no more. I don not think there’s anyone who’s in their right mind who’ll take on a cover that is non-benefial, otherwise we would have insured them separately. This did not come as an added free benefit, it was paid for. I provided Absa Life with the original contract that my mom signed to prove that the clause of discontinuation when the main member dies is not included, however, to date I'm still battling to get this resolved. When the terms and conditions changed no one contacted my mother with an updated policy schedule. Why do we take funeral covers in the first place? We take cover for peace of mind so that should anything happen we don’t get stranded, and now I learn that my Dad is not covered after having being paying premiums from 2007. A death is something unforeseeable and nobody knows who’ll pass away first between the spouses, this something out of our control. It would be something if the contract that was signed had this clause so that we could make an informed decision, however this is not the case. This didn't come as an additional free benefit, I paid for both of them. We're into the fourth month with no resolution and it doesn't look like Absa Life is not prepared to assist in this matter however this is their product. I've sent numerous emails and have been told that this matter has been escalated to top management, surely this can't take this long to resolve, it's plain and simple, the premium has been paid all these years and the benefit needs to continue or be paid out. I desperately need this sorted out as my Dad is currently not covered and this is risky on my part as should anything happen (God forbid), I won't afford to bury him. Absa Life has benefitted all these years, does it mean I was sold something that does not exist? Is this not considered to be **********?

Good day Lebogang,
I have since not received a response or resolution to my issue, a commitment was made to get back to me by 09 April but no one bothered. Absa Life went and terminated the policy unbeknown to me and sent me a confirmation. Someone still has to tell me what then becomes of the contributions paid for my Dad from 2007 up until my mom's passing in Jan 2021. Can you please please expedite on your side.

Regards
Jackie

I just wanted to provide an update/feedback on my query, Absa Life finally came to the party and paid up my Dad's cover. The matter is finally resolved and has been put to bed. Kudos to Lebogang Mashiane and Zandile Nkosi who were instrumental and committed to assisting in getting this sorted. They lived up to their promise. Your efforts and willingness are much appreciated. Thanks again.
