Unauthorised transactions on account

I contacted Absa on 2 September to report 18 unauthorized transactions on my account. They asked me to send them the information to their disputes department. I did so the same day. Finally, today they answered me, telling me that I should contact the merchants directly. I tried doing that, the one merchant won't deal with me as I don't have an account with them (PayPal). The other merchant I have been unable to locate (Westinn Missouri). I expect my bank to sort our their own mistakes. I did not make any agreements with either of these merchants, so they had no right to charge my account in the first place. Since there are two separate merchants involved, I suspect a bank problem, not a merchant problem. Somebody probably posted the charges to the wrong account. I have since cancelled my card and got a replacement (Absa's stop card department was very helpful, unlike their disputes department).

Besides promises of investigating it further, I have heard nothing from Absa. I have phoned Absa several times yesterday, in each event, they eventually hung up on me.
My request is actually very simple - I did not authorize the transactions. Ask the merchant to prove whether I gave them permission. If they fail to do so, take the money from their account and put it in mine. Simple as that.
It's funny how this is so simple for a bank to do when the client is the merchant. Our company merchant account has been charged several times for reversals of completely illegitimate claims. Though obviously the clients who have ****med our company out of legitimate revenue, do not bank with Absa. Absa cannot even challenge a merchant's authority to debit.

After somebody at ABSA actually bothered to look into the problem, my problem was resolved within a few hours. Special thanks to Philip, Oliver and Daphne for helping sort this out. I just wish it wasn't so hard to get help in the first place.
