SAPS Case number 201/3/2017 ***** via a Compromised Email

Our emails were hacked and due to this a ********** payment were made. We reported this at our bank FNB but the payment were made to a ABSA account. FNB negotiated with ABSA not to release the payment. ABSA agreed to put a hold on the full amount until the ***** case were investigated. FNB and ABSA agreed that this was ***** and informed me that the money will be refunded to our account. I then received a mail from FNB that ABSA informed them that the account used in the ***** transaction had and overdraft and ABSA will use our money to pay off the overdraft on this account and only refund us with the difference. I did received the difference, but now ABSA is ignoring all contact from my side to explain why I’m responsible to pay off the overdraft on a ABSA account that were used in a ***** ****. Should ABSA say that this account is not the account of the ******** responsible for the *****, ABSA should know that they can’t use my money to pay off an overdraft account for a random client of ABSA. Where the security was of such a nature that ********* could use this account for ********** transactions.

I tried to phone ABSA Banking ombudsman but after holding on for 59 min I gave up and put the phone down. If I try and log a call on the website for the Bank ombudsman, the complaint does not register. I would like to know how to contact ABSA. My Bank FNB is very helpful but due to a confidentiality agreement between banks FNB can’t give me the contact details for the person that handled this case to refund me part of the money.

Dear Customer

Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. From what i understand you are banking with FNB which in this case FNB needs to make followup with Absa. Should their concerns not be addressed in a favourable way then they need to escalate the matter for a proper recourse.
