Puzzled beyond reason

Good morning to ABSA I must compliment ABSA for their loyalty to my mom as one of their clients for many, many years and later also giving her complimentary benefits as an aged person. Her loyalty to the bank was also very evident declining the opportunity to invest in other banks despite my dad being connected to one of the largest 4 banks during his years of employment. For many years I had the power of attorney on my moms account due to her physical incapacity. When my mom passed away at the end of last year, I had no problem closing her current and savings accounts. The 2 ladies who assisted me at Northgate ABSA couldn’t have been more sympathetic and understanding in my loss and efficient in carrying out their tasks. However, the one then suggested a man help me to close the credit card account. He was most officious and unhelpful. He insisted I have a letter appointing me to do it. I had given him the death certificate. He said he cannot do it without more paperwork. I said to him but it is your interest to close the account. If I were to throw the card away and someone find and spend on it is a loss to the bank. He said we have insurance for that. I have also phoned the bank and they also refuse to close the account necessitating even proof of address for myself. The ABSA app on my phone is now closed for my mom due to her death. Could someone from ABSA please explain the reason behind this? The credit card expires next March. Will they then issue a new card for a deceased person? Do they then deliver it to the Zandfontein cemetery? No money is owing on the credit card. The stubbornness to refuse to close the account spoils the wonderful image we have had of ABSA all the years. Puzzled beyond reason Kingsley

Thank you for your email Marvellus However I am very disappointed as you have failed to resolve the situation and still cause great distress Can you explain to me why all the extra documentation is needed when you already have the death certificate You have not answered my question - when my late mom's credit card expires next March what do you do? Do you send a new one to the cemetery at Zandfontein. My plan is to cut up the card, burn it and consider the matter solved Disappointed Greetings Kingsley PS In addition I have attempted to contact Marvellous on the number given at least 7 times without a reply.

Dear Kingsley Stone,  Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. We have completed the investigation into your complaint and would like to respond accordingly.  Your primary concern is that the bank is refusing to close your late mother's Credit Card account, despite you having a power of attorney for all her accounts.  Our Response: Please be advised that our Deceased Estate Department is unable to close the deceased’s Credit Card account without the required documents, as outlined in the previous email sent to you. The required documents are necessary according to the Retail Deceased Estates process.  We have closed this matter from our side for now, and it will be reopened upon receiving the requested documents.  You are welcome to contact us should you require further assistance in this regard. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused and appreciate your understanding.  Regards, Marvellus Chauke

Best regards,
