Preying on the poor
I'm sure a lot of South Africans find themselves in this situation. Reaching retirement, having financial difficulty due to poor health and having no option but go under debt review. Banks like Absa however, have no empathy and do what they want with the poor. Absa "renegotiated" (not much less than the original bond premium), and my parents accepted the new premium. They now pay the Debt review company who pay Absa. We get a statement monthly and know this is be in done. Yet Absa debits my father's account every month. This leads to having to reverse these debit orders, other debit orders bounce, having to pay exorbitant charges and it affects his payment profile even more. Not to mention added strain to an already unhealthy and sick individual. I have been querying this for months now. We are yet to get refunds for all these charges or any kind of aknowledgement or apology. Apparently Absa does not have the capability to do a simple things aa cancel a debit order.
