Poor customer Service
It was recently brought to my attention that i still had an absa account open from when i was a high school student, when i got a letter in the post informing me my account was inactive and I needed to FICA it. As i no longer bank with absa i went into the Tygervalley Branch to close the account. After approx a 1 hour wait in the long customer service que i was eventually helped. When i explained i wanted to close the account the staff member on duty explained as my account was inactive and not FICA verified, that there was either the option of filling in a few forms and sending it away to be approved, which would take a few days, or just FICA verifying my account now, and then i would be able to close the account now. As i wanted to close that account that day and not have to come back, i went with the second option, and quickly went to FNB who i currently bank with to get a proof of address. I was then back to absa and helped by the same customer service lady who allowed me to jump the que. After approx a 30min complicated process i was told i that the FICA was done and that i now needed to go draw the money from the account out at the teller to close the account. I then waited approx 20min in the teller line, when I got to the teller, the teller informed me that i still needed to FICA my account and that i couldn't close my account. After explaining that i had just done the FICA, the teller went to check with the customer service person, who told him to tell me that the FICA will take 24 hrs to activate (so much for closing it on same day...). The next chance i had to get to ABSA was approx 1 week later, This time i went to the Durbanville branch, i then waited 30 min in teller line, only to be told by the teller that i couldn't close my account as it still needed to be FICA'ed and that the amount to withdraw was now less due to the months bank charges going off, (apparently ABSA has no issue with taking the full bank charges on an inactive account that cant be used.) As i didn't have time then to wait in the long customer service line i had to leave. A week later i went into the durbanville branch again, and then waited approx 2hours in customer service line. The staff member who helped me there then took some time trying to figure out what went wrong, as well as spoke to staff member in tygervalley who did the fica, eventually it was decided to just redo the whole FICA, Which i would need to give 24 hrs to activate. This time it seems to have worked as the next week i was able to finally close the account and draw out the money, the whole process took about 4 bank visits and approx 7 hours of my time in total.
