Outrageous Incompetence and Lack of Accountability at ABSA

I am beyond frustrated with the appalling service I have endured from ABSA regarding a critical matter that has now been unresolved for an unacceptable 1 year and 8 months. On 9 November 2021, I made a payment of R150,000.00 as a loan, and I am now entangled in legal proceedings due to non-repayment. To proceed, I require an official bank statement showing the recipient's account number for that transaction.

Despite visiting the ABSA branch at N1 City in Goodwood, I was informed that even a printed statement would not display the account number—an absurd claim for a major financial institution. As a software developer who has worked on major banking systems, I know firsthand that obtaining such fundamental transaction details is well within the capabilities of any competent bank.

After reaching out via email, Thandeka Madlopha responded with nothing more than a generic, unhelpful reply, stating my query had been forwarded to ***ca. Over 1 year and 8 months later, I am still waiting for even a single response from that department. Despite multiple follow-ups, sending attachments with clear proof (bank statements and screenshots), and following instructions to email ***, I have received nothing but silence.

In my last attempt to escalate the matter, I copied in Johan Bezuidenhout [Private Banker | Premium & Entrepreneur Markets, Absa Private Bank Century City] and even sent an email to Christine Wu (Chief Executive: Everyday Banking), yet I have still not heard back. The negligence from ABSA's senior staff is utterly disgraceful and points to a systemic failure in customer service.

This grotesque lack of accountability and endless deflections are not only infuriating but completely unacceptable. It is beyond belief that ABSA, an institution entrusted with safeguarding clients’ finances, cannot even provide a simple piece of evidence for a transaction—a failure that directly impacts ongoing court proceedings.

I demand that ABSA log into my account, verify the expired beneficiary “Hein Tuin,” and confirm the transfer to account number *** as official evidence. This request should have been addressed long ago, and ABSA's negligence has caused unnecessary delays and complications in my legal process, wasting both my time and resources.

ABSA, your continued failure to provide basic customer service is shameful.

Reviewer Update
Dear Pravesh Bejay,

Thank you for your prompt response and for providing the documentation I needed. I appreciate your assistance in finally addressing this matter.

However, I want to make it very clear that my frustration with ABSA goes far beyond this single incident. This issue persisted for 1 year and 8 months due to a systemic problem within ABSA—one of passing responsibility and ignoring customer needs. The complete lack of accountability I encountered across multiple departments and senior personnel reveals a deeper issue in how ABSA operates and values its customers.

I have been a customer since the days of Volkskas, dating back to the early 90s. Unfortunately, this experience has led me to take my business elsewhere. I have already cancelled my ABSA credit card and moved my mortgage to another bank. Until ABSA fundamentally changes its approach to customer service and accountability, I cannot feel fully satisfied, nor can I trust that similar issues won’t arise for other customers.

I sincerely hope that my experience will serve as a catalyst for ABSA to review and improve its service standards.

Thank you once again for resolving this matter, and I hope it marks a step toward positive change at ABSA.

Kind regards,
Pierre Basson
