NO FEEDBACK ON ***** INVESTIGATION

Absa and Vodacom have been procrastinating on a Cyber-crime ***** committed on both my Vodacom account as well as my Absa Credit card and cheque account at the beginning of April. This is what happened:

VODACOM:

1. My contract was cancelled and a SIM swap was done on 4th April 2017 so that I would not be alerted to the fact that ********** were cleaning out all the money from my Absa accounts. The ***** was reported on the 7th April to Vodacom and I was informed that a person from the Forensic department would contact me within 24 hours. This never happened and I have been spending hours at a time liaising with various call centre departments trying to obtain case numbers, names and phone numbers for the ***** investigating officer.

2. After numerous conversations to the call centre, I was told that the information relating to the ***** is being investigated. It was suggested that I draw up an Affidavit to the Forensic department stating exactly what has transpired from the date of the crime and including all the people I have spoken to at the various Vodacom call centres which might help to resolve the matter, which I did.

3. The promised reinstatement of my contract didn’t materialise. After 4 weeks I was told that I should enter into a new contract myself. I entered into a new contract on 28th April and an upgrade was also done on my phone.

4. A week later my service was blocked due to lack of communication between credit and cancellations departments regarding April Statement. Although Cancellations department admitted I was not liable for payment, the credit had not been passed in spite of the fact that I was in possession of the reference number confirming the reversal of charges. I even had to go and pay my May statement for the new contract and furnish proof of this payment a week before it was due in order to have my phone service reconnected. In spite of complying with this ridiculous request, I was told it would take 7 to 14 working days for the reinstatement of my phone line.

5. This took me right into the 1st June when a second SIM swap took place on my card. I requested a new number as well as the cancellation of my new contract since this number and contract was obviously not secure. I also requested that all my expenses to date be refunded since I have not had a working phone service since the beginning of April. I even had to go to head office at Voda World for my new number. I visited the head office on three separate occasions to conclude the matter, but the only answer I get is that Forensic department is looking into the matter .

6. In the meantime everything is blocked – including my new unused number – until Forensic department can sort out the matter. Still no information or resolution is forthcoming from Vodacom.

In total this matter has been dragging for nearly 11 weeks now.

ABSA CREDIT CARD AND CHEQUE ACCOUNTS:

Upon the abovementioned events at Vodacom, the following Cyber ***** took place at Absa:

1. The total of my Credit Card limit balance of R69,800-00 was withdrawn and paid over to my Cheque account. This amount was then withdrawn by way of 25 eft transactions within about half an hour.

2. A Personal Load of R120,000-00 had **********ly been granted and paid into my cheque account, which fortunately could be blocked before it was transferred out of my account by the ****s.

3. Of my personal money just over R30,000-00 was taken which caused some of my debit orders and other commitments to remain unpaid. I had to borrow money to pay these outstanding monies.

4. As a widow and pensioner who lives alone, I am greatly out of pocket and yet Absa still sends me my cheque account and credit card statements regularly, demanding that I pay my “overdraft and the high interest charged thereon”.

5. Although I have eventually obtained the ***** case number, know that Julius Steward is dealing with the ***** investigation, and that Sharon Jacob is his supervisor, the matter has still not reached conclusion. My emails and messages to Mr Steward remain unanswered. One day I happened to get through to Ms Jacob who told me that my case had been looked at (so what does that mean?) I told her about my financial predicament that has resulted from this, and she said she would look into the matter to see if it can be expedited. She would also advise credit card and cheque account divisions not to send these accounts to me but even this has not stopped coming at the end of each month. That was on the 8th of June and since then I’ve not heard from her, nor have I been able to get in touch with the Forensic department as the phones are engaged all the time, or if the phone rings long enough a message comes up telling me that the voice mailbox is full and that I must call again later.

The date at the time of posting this letter is 16th June 2017 – nearly 11 weeks after the crime took place.
