Unauthorized Double Journal Debit Leaves Me Stranded
I am deeply disappointed with Absa's handling of my account. Without my knowledge or consent, they processed a Journal Debit of R6427.56 two days in succession, totaling R12,855.12. This unauthorized action has left me in a dire situation.
I am due to move out of my current residence on Saturday and into a new place. However, with this unexpected deduction, I am now unable to pay both the rent and deposit for my new accommodation. My current landlord has already made it clear that I cannot stay beyond my lease, leaving me without a place to live.
It is unacceptable for Absa to act against consumer protection laws. While I may be in debt with the bank, the High Court has ruled that unauthorized deductions, such as this, are ******** under the NCA. For reference, the court ruling can be found here: http://www.derebus.org.za/high-court-rules-that-the-common-law-principle-of-set-off-is-not-applicable-to-debts-arising-from-credit-agreements-regulated-by-the-nca/
I expect an urgent resolution, including the immediate reversal of these debits. Financial institutions must respect their customers' rights and comply with the law.
