Insurance policy- Totally bad coverage and service
About 4 years ago i purchased a house and the procedure requires a COC (Electrical Certificate of Compliance)from the seller. Upon registration of the property at ABSA forced me to take out Building Insurance through OOBA in order to grant the loan and finalise the purchase. After all these years i have paid and about 2 months ago i started experiencing electrical shortages in my kitchen, dining room area. I logged a call and OOBA sent out a selected electrician to do inspection at my property.
I was notified of loose connections and spoke to the electrician upon receipt of the quotation. He assured me that the loose connections IS NOT A FIRE RISK since i told him I can not afford to pay R8000 for repairs since this should be covered by this policy.
On Thursday, the 17th of August I received a call from OOBA stating that should I not fix the loose wires, the policy would lapse. I asked the lady to put this in writing (see below):
We have been informed that you were dissatisfied with the outcome of your claim in which Hollard Insurers discussed the matter with you to explain the reason why. Unfortunately the claim is not covered by the policy as there is no insured event which allows for the Insurers to pay out the claim, and according to the report from the Service Provider there is a problem with the loose connections which could cause serious damage to your home and we urge you to urgently have this fixed for your own account so that future claims are not jeopardized. The repairs which need to be done is R8,140 exl vat for your own account and this is for the following: • Replace 1 x 3 lever light switch • Replace 1 x double lever light switch • Replace 1 x single lever light switch • Replace 12 x down lights excluding transformers • Replace 10 x down lights with transformers Your policy has been endorsed to exclude FIRE damage to the property and we require proof of repairs to be sent to us by latest 14.08.2017 so that the policy is not cancelled. Should you wish to discuss this matter further, please do not hesitate to give me a call.
Now, my argument is, why does OOBA not get a second opinion of another electrician since the first electrician told me one thing and gave a report to OOBA stating the obvious and that it is a fire risk? Why do I have a policy and not be claimed in such a case? OOBA can go to hell and all must know about their poor service as I feel they steel from their clients. This is totally unacceptable.
