FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY - ABSA VISA SIGNATURE CREDIT CARD AUTOMATIC INSURANCE COVER
My wife travelled to Salt Lake City in the USA. The tickets were purchased using our ABSA Visa Signature Credit Card and therefore I availed myself of the insurance that is included with the card. The Delta flight from Salt Lake City to Atlanta [the first leg of the return to South Africa] was cancelled less than 24 hours before the departure. This involved re-routing via Amsterdam and a delay of more than 24 hours in Salt Lake City which resulted in additional costs to rebook her flight to Bloemfontein [her final destination in SA] as well as an overnight stay in Johannesburg. I phoned Chubb [ABSA Visa Signature Credit Card insurers] on 4 July to enquire about the process of submitting a claim under “Cancellation & Curtailment" and "Travel Delay" benefits in the policy. I was given an email address at broadspire. I sent the claim request on the same day. After several requests for additional information, yesterday [7 August] we were informed that the claim was rejected. It stated the reason: “We acknowledge receipt of the claim for the Trip delay.” “However during the inbound flight, the first leg of the journey from Salt Lake to Atlanta was delayed due to operational reasons, airport ground space and baggage issue and consequently cancelled. As a result of such, you arrived late in Johannesburg. The claim has been raised for the inconvenience caused to you due to the flight delay. Please note, the policy provides coverage if the flight has been cancelled/ delayed by the airlines due to the below mentioned reasons, whereas in this instance, the flight was delayed due to operational reasons, airport ground space and baggage issue. Therefore the claim is not admissible. We regret to advise that this instance does not fall within the scope of coverage under the policy and respectfully refer you to the wording which reads as follows: We respectfully refer you to the policy wording: Travel Delay What is covered If departure of the scheduled Public Transport on which the Cardholder is booked to travel is delayed a for at least 4 hours on the outbound or return journey due to: 1. Strike or Industrial Action or 2. Adverse Weather or 3. mechanical breakdown of or a technical fault occurring in the scheduled Public Transport on which the Cardholder is booked to travel” One thinks that one is covered by the “free” ABSA Visa Signature Credit Card insurance until you put in a claim. THEN YOU REALISE THAT IT IS A FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY.
