Failure to Act on Security Breach and No Response to My Appeal

I am writing this out of deep frustration with Absa Bank’s complete failure to safeguard my account and its continued silence after I formally disputed the outcome of my unauthorised transaction case. I have been a loyal Absa client for over 40 years, and I find it unacceptable that a bank of this size and reputation can ignore clear evidence of negligence in a matter involving unauthorised activity on my account. The facts are simple: • Absa’s own security system flagged the transaction within seconds — meaning the individuals involved were already known to Absa. • The unauthorised transaction remained “uncleared” for a full day, giving Absa ample time to stop or reverse it. • Absa’s security team contacted me, not the other way around. • When I asked for the payment to be reversed, I was told it could not be done because of the POPIA Act — an explanation that makes no sense. POPIA exists to protect customer data, not to prevent the bank from intervening when ********s are accessing client funds. Absa had both the awareness and the opportunity to prevent this loss but failed to act. After I submitted a detailed appeal outlining these points, I have received no response from the Security Division. For a customer who has entrusted this bank with their finances for four decades, this lack of accountability and communication is unacceptable. Absa cannot claim to take account security seriously while leaving clients to bear losses in cases where the bank itself was alerted in real time. I am demanding that Absa review and reopen my case, provide a proper explanation for their inaction, and clarify how POPIA could possibly justify allowing an unauthorised transaction to proceed. Until then, I will continue to pursue this matter publicly, as other long-standing clients deserve to know how Absa handles unauthorised transaction disputes like mine.
