Dubious Absa savings account balance
I know about the Absa savings account too well. Just yesterday, i printed my full statement from the atm at Megacity branch and it reflected R0.00. I knew this was incorrect as i hadn't used the account for sometime. I proceeded to the teller by the name of Keabetswe to verify if this account has any outstandings and if that R0.00 is correct, so i would know whether to deposit money or hold it cash as i need all of it for an emergency. She then checked it and assured me that the balance is indeed R0.00 with nothing outstanding. Given that information i then deposited R710 at the atm with the knowledge that i will have a balance of around R700. To my shock, the reflecting balance was only R100. I then went back to Keabetswe the teller with a slip to demand a refund as this was contrary to what she had assured me. She checked again only to tell me post the deposit that there had been monthly fees deducted. To Absa's advantage, this she couldnt pick up when i went to ask the 1st time before i made the deposit based on the R0.00 balance assurance she gave me. Clearly i was misled into making a deposit because had the monthly fees outstanding been disclosed to me, i wouldn't have made the deposit with the emergency money. To top it all of, this is *********, misleading and poor product design by Absa, the opposite of clientcentric. I have since launched a formal complain by filling out forms and demanding that the *********y charged R600 which was not disclosed be credited back into my account . I am still awaiting their response.
