All employees was temporary on Lay-off at our company and received letters so we can take to the bank and companies explaining the situation. I took my letter to Absa branch in Witbank and explained the situation. I made arrangements for my home loan and that was fine. After 4 weeks in lay-off period, the bank phoned to say my Tjek account is R2000 behind. I need to settle. I explained again my situation and the mentioned the balance was because of returned debit orders that I pay penalties on. R150 per returned debit order. I cancelled most of my debit orders with suppliers that I know off. There is some small amounts like R24 also but now sure what this is for. So every time someone tries to debit the account, I pay R150 for that returned debit order. I settled the outstanding R2000 and brought the account to a positive balance. I again explained to the lady from absa helpdesk that we are on Lay-off and no debit orders can go off now. They said they will cancel the overdraft limit on my account and I also agreed. So 4 months later we again got lay-off for 8 weeks. Then I receive a letter from absa stating my account is now R3700 in negative balance. I need to pay this urgently.
