Credit card closed but still owing ....

I had a credit card with Absa for several years and eventually decided to eventually settle the card and close the account, I went into branch at braamfontein (JD) possibly between 2014 & 2015 and paid the full amount at the teller and advised that i was closing the card, funds were received and the card was cut in front of me. 3 years later at some point i receive an sms stating that funds were deducted from my Savings account to pay my credit account, I immediately dismissed the sms having known full well that i dont own a credit card. Eventually i received a call from the Absa consultant in February 2017 who stated that i owed the bank about R200 on bank fees on my credit card. I was infuriated and told the consultant that i do not have a credit card any more and he advised that i needed to pay this amount and then phone the credit card department to confirm closure of this card, needless to say i was frustrated and felt that it was not my problem that the account was kept open to date, month end came and again i received another sms stating that funds have been deducted to pay my credit card. I then visited the JD(braamfontein branch) once again to find out what was happening. The lady assisting me then stated that i have an active account and it's at a negative balance, i told her that i had previously deposited a large sum in order to settle the account years back and she said the funds are reflecting however there was no closure and over the years the card has now accumulated bank fees and i am owing over R3000.00. I almost fainted as i didnt even understand how in the world charges even come up to that amount. I tried explaining to her that i only under the impression that i needed to pay only R200 but she said that would only be the instalment, i told her that funds have also been deducted and needed clarity regarding the weird sms notifications and she advised that this was a JOURNAL DEBIT by the bank in order to pay this outstanding amount. At this point i felt like dying as amount of R200/R300 have been taken from my account without my consent. I told the lady that this had to be resolved and she then stated that there was nothing she can do because even the staff that worked in that branch 3 years ago have even left and the only way is to pay this amount or i will be listed and funds will continue to be taken from my account. She insisted that i make a replacement card in order to make the necessesary payment of R190, i then told her that i will not be making a replacement because i did not cause this problem and she then told me that in that case "funds will be deducted"..... She then told me it would be better to just have the replacement done and have the bank debit only the R190 instead of having the JOURNAL done, she went ahead and requested for a new card. I left the branch with nothing but a R3000.00 debt that i did not want. After this request was done i have been getting several sms communication advising me of the card and the benefits, i even received a call from Absa wanting to know why have I not used the card and that they will lower my interest fee from 24% to 21%... My question is why all these years was i not contacted when the 1st month was due? Or at least 3months? Why did the card not go domant due to no usage at least after a year? who in the world would choose to have an account fully paid and not close it in order for it to accumulate interest owing?
