Concern Regarding Home Loan Debit Order Timing and Associated Fees

Dear ABSA Home Loans Team,

I am writing to raise a concern regarding the monthly reminders advising me to “top up” my account ahead of the scheduled home loan debit order.

My contract clearly stipulates that the debit order is to be deducted on the 1st of each month. This date was specifically selected because my salary is paid on the last working day of the month. When the 1st falls over a weekend or public holiday, it becomes impractical—and frankly unreasonable—to expect the funds to be available before that date.

Despite being a loyal customer for over 20 years, with no missed payments, I am still being charged a debit order fee if the funds are not reflected before the 1st calendar day. This feels inconsistent with both the agreed deduction date and the realities of salary payment cycles.

I understand there may be clauses allowing early processing when the 1st falls on a non-business day; however, the same practical considerations apply to customers whose salaries are only received at month-end. The current approach effectively penalises customers for circumstances aligned with standard employment pay structures.

I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss this matter with a representative, as I would like clarity on:

Why the debit order is processed earlier than the contractually agreed date.

The basis on which fees are app**** in these instances.

Possible solutions to align the debit order timing with the agreed schedule and avoid unnecessary charges.

Please arrange for a staff member to contact me to resolve this matter.

Kind regards,
