Complaint: Poor and ********* Handling of Credit Card Account Closure

I am extremely disappointed with the poor and ********* manner in which ABSA Bank’s Credit Card Division has handled my credit card account. I have been an ABSA client for several years and have been struggling to settle my credit card debt due to financial constraints. In an effort to clear my credit profile and restore my credit score, I went as far as selling my car to pay off the outstanding amount in full. After settling the balance, I contacted ABSA to request closure of the credit card account. However, my experience since then has been extremely frustrating and unprofessional. The calls to the Credit Card Division would ring and drop repeatedly before I finally managed to speak to a consultant, who informed me that my profile was “blocked” and she could not complete security verification. I was advised to visit a branch for assistance. I then visited an ABSA branch and spent over an hour while the branch consultant was on the phone with the Credit Card Division, yet the issue was never resolved. Despite having settled the account, my credit card remains active and I continue to be charged monthly fees and premiums, including: • Finance charge: R342.99 • Credit life premium: R83.56 • Credit facility fee: R30.00 • Monthly account fee: R75.00 This totals R531.55 per month for a service I no longer use or want. I find it completely unacceptable that I am being forced to keep an account I have settled and requested to close. These continuous charges are unjust and detrimental to my financial standing. I have fulfilled my obligation by paying what I owed. ABSA is now acting unfairly by keeping the account active against my will. I request immediate closure of the credit card account, reversal of any charges incurred after settlement, and written confirmation of account closure. If this matter is not resolved promptly, I will have no choice but to consider closing all my ABSA accounts and moving my banking elsewhere.
