Closing a paid up Credit Card with ABSA is difficult.

I am now on day three of trying to close my credit card account. On my first call, I was told there were uncleared payments. I accepted this and waited for the funds to clear. Once everything reflected correctly and my balance showed R0.00, I called again, went through the full verification process, only to be told that the account could not be closed because it had to be handled by another department that is apparently always too busy.

This morning, I called again. After speaking to four different agents, I was eventually told that another amount was due. This was despite my account showing a zero balance and having been told previously that everything was cleared. It took four conversations for someone to finally explain this. At that point, I questioned whether this amount was a legitimate closure fee or a Christmas bonus for ABSA. I paid it immediately.

Even after paying this additional amount, the agent still could not close the account because once again, the department responsible for closures was too busy.

Last week Friday, I was harassed over R55 on an overdraft account, which has since been closed. After calling ABSA, I was explicitly told that nothing was in arrears. Despite this, I received 11 phone calls, 4 SMS messages, and even an unsolicited WhatsApp message stating that I owed R55, which I did not owe. This level of harassment over a non existent amount is unacceptable.

For context, since opening my accounts with ABSA, not a single day has gone by where my accounts were in arrears. They have always been fully up to date.

Stop paying executives millions and start investing in proper infrastructure, systems, and customer service. I will not be embarrassed or harassed over amounts that do not exist, and I will not tolerate being treated this way.

For this reason, I am in the process of closing all my accounts with ABSA and moving to a bank that actually understands YOUR slogan "Your story matters".

Goodbye ABSA, and thank you for NOTHING!
