Charging for closing an account

My daughter switched from Absa to FNB a year ago but didn't close her Absa account. The account had ZAR 500 in it, and she thought she would close the account and collect the money when she had the chance. She went to Absa in Centurion yesterday to close the account and collect her money, but was told that she owed the bank ZAR 57 because she hadn't used the account for so long. She was threatened by the bank staff that if she didn't pay the money, the 'overdraft' would continue to grow. So she paid it and closed the account.

Whether or not this is within Absa' rights, it is at the very least very poor practice. In over a year she has had no contact from Absa to say where are you, and this is what is happening to your account.

She gets great service from FNB.
