Can consumers rely on the Banking Ombudsman?
On 3 July 2023, I was unwittingly ****med into paying R9 800 into a *****ulent TymeBank account. Strangely, ABSA immediately issued a notice of payment, advising that the R9 800 had been paid into the correct Nedbank account. When the recipient informed us a few days later that the R9 800 had not been paid into her Nedbank account, we immediately contacted ABSA. To our utter amazement, ABSA REFUSED to refund the amount, saying it was too late. If ABSA had NOT issued a bogus notice of payment, we could have timeously raised the alarm to stop payment into the *****ulent TymeBank account. The matter was referred to the Banking Ombudsman which spent SIX months investigating the matter. In January 2024 it unilaterally decided to close the case without resolving the matter! When I queried this on 25 January 2024 there was a deathly silence. It is now another six months later and I still haven’t received any feedback. Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
