BEING BUL**** INTO PAYING OFF DEBT
Due to losing my job, I had fallen behind on my credit card payments. When I did find employment once again, I made arrangements to pay a set fee each month towards my credit card, I have never defaulted on these payments...even when I was stuck with cash, I always ensured that at least a portion of that installment was paid.
In December I made an extra payment due to receiving a little extra cash and knowing that January would be a financially difficult month. In January I short paid my installment. This was the only time I defaulted on this arrangement.
On 18th February 2022, I received a S129 letter of demand from ABSA's attorneys demanding that I either settle the amount in full immediately, settle in 3 monthly installments of an amount that I definitely cannot afford or make a payment which is less than the installment already agreed to.
A week prior to receiving this notice, this same attorney's offices call Centre called me to discuss the installation and we agreed that I would continue with the normal payments, the agent assured me that there were no legal proceedings, and now to receive this letter.
I am completely disappointed that they would take this route and try to bully me especially looking at the state of our economy and how people are struggling to make ends meet
