Bad Customer Service at Absa Bank

Yesterday I went to Absa Bank at Cnr Lilian Ngoyi and Pretorius Street in Pretoria CBD.

I went to the bank because I wanted to cash in the cheque my landlord had given me for my flat deposit.

I was called at Teller 9 by Lerato Leouw and when I got there, I gave her the cheque dated 03/11/2016(three months old cheque) and my ID, and then conversation went like

Lerato Leouw: she sighed and asked me why I took long to cash in the cheque

Me: I told her I no longer stay in Pretoria , and asked if it was a problem

Lerato Leouw: She rep**** with an attitude and said no it’s a concern if a person takes time to cash in their cheque and it raises suspicion ,and then she wrote on some piece of paper and went away for about 5 mints. When she gave back she told me that the signatures on the ABSA system do not match the with the signatures on the cheque .

Me: I asked what I should do now

Lerato Leouw: She was irritated , and told me to go back to the Landlord and ask her to issue a new cheque or go to another bank.

Me: I asked why can’t she phone the flat and ask about the authenticity of the cheque

Lerato Leouw: She was like no I won’t phone just go back and ask for another cheque

I went back to at the Flat as it’s just a block away from the bank, and when I got there I explained the situation to the lady that gave me the cheque and her name is Jane Richardso and is one of the people that signs the cheque, her and Van der Merwe,

The process is like this, Van der Merwe signs the Cheque when the cheques are prepared and then Jane Richardso signs them when issuing to a person.

She told me that it’s pointless signing a new cheque as Van der Merwe had signed all the cheques to be issues the same way as the cheque I had and then she will sign the same as she signed on my cheque. She told me that normally they call her at the bank to confirm the cheque via the cheque number if the cheque is valid.

She gave me her contact details and told me to ask them to call her she will confirm.

I went to the back to the bank,

Me: I explained that the lady said she won’t prepare a new cheque as the signature will be same, and I saw on the other cheque that the people signed the same way as the sign on the cheque

Lerato Leouw: And then she started shouting for the whole bank to hear her and she was talking with hands busy shouting saying she will not cash it in, and then she called her manager, Lerato, but I didn’t the manager’s Surname.

Me: I explained the situation to her

Lerato Manager: The manager took the peace of paper that I had with the telephone number of the flat and told me that she will call the flat; she went away for like 30mnts; when she came back she told me the lady at the flat said the will update the signature on the system and I should come so that they can issue me with a new cheque

I went back to the flat and told Jane what the manager had told me, and she said the manager **** she didn’t call her and she never said that.
