Appalling Treatment of Elderly Customer at ABSA Overport

While awaiting assistance at Absa Overport based in the Atrium Mall, I witnessed an appalling display of rudeness and complete lack of consideration shown towards an elderly man—aged 79—who was there with his family.

This gentleman clearly had difficulty hearing, and his family was respectfully assisting him through the process. Despite this, your staff showed no patience, empathy, or basic human decency. Instead of adapting their approach or showing a shred of understanding toward his disability, they were dismissive and unhelpful.

It was uncomfortable and upsetting to witness such treatment of someone who deserved kindness and dignity, especially in a setting that should be professional and customer-focused. Regulations are important, yes—but so is compassion. The way your staff handled this situation was cold and mechanical, showing no flexibility, respect, or care for a fellow human being.

If this is how ABSA treats the elderly and vulnerable, it raises serious concerns about the values your branch upholds. It also makes customers like myself question whether we can trust your institution with our long-term business. Banking is not just about numbers—it’s about people. And based on this experience, your service failed miserably.

Do better.
