Absa won't let me be

Probably 5 or 6 years ago (yes, years) I walked into the Absa Bank in Mmabatho and asked them to close my credit card account . The lady promptly took my bank card and cut it up. A few years later for a job application I found out I still have an Absa account active. This time I went to branch in Gauteng and asked that the account be closed. Today I get a call from a courier company telling me they are delivering a student credit card to me....mind you, I'm well over 30. Why won't they just close this account. I called Absa a while ago and they won't answer the phone. How do I rid myself of these people?
