Absa Visa Card Fee promises broken

After 20 years with Absa i reluctantly decided to close my account to reduce my monthly banking fees and chose to only keep a single account with the Bank i have a house bond with. While closing my accounts at the branch, Absa Visa Card convinced me to keep my Absa credit card active for 'those unexpected events' and Absa promised that they would not charge me any fees. So with my current account closed and my address changed i did not have a way to check my credit card balance (no online banking access and no physical statements) i naively went on my way thinking that if i dont use the card that there would be no need to make any payments, as the lady indicated.

Now a year, later i received a call from their credit department warning me that i have not been making my monthly fee payments and that they would be taking the necessary action.

I assumed that this was an administrative error that could be recitified but the help lines were unable to put me in touch with the relevent person to resolve this. I am hoping Absa will still restore my faith in what i assumed is the bank with the best service ethic in the country.

Where to from here? Please help.

Thank you,

Stephen
