Good day, i would like to take this opportunity to air my views RE: ABSA Vehicle Asset Finance. As many of us are aware, the state of our country and the economy In South Africa is challenging, to say the least. I started a job at a new company in November 2023 in Johannesburg, at the time things were good lots of work in the pipeline and lots of promises. After a few weeks, i was advised that a big mining company that we do lots of work for was pulling out of the country and shelving all the SA projects, which had a huge negative effect on me and my livelihood as this was or would've been my main source of work and billable hours. Being a contractor for the past 18 years, this means, no work, no pay. I refused to give up, work was scarce but i dug deep and managed to secure some work with the same company but the Canadian office on a huge rail project. Things went well, for a while but then the company lost a huge chunk of the project and i demobilized. Again, i refused to quit, i hustled and managed to secure work on another phase of the project as i made a good name for myself with the Canadian teams etc. Then the tariff situation with Donald Trump came along and Canada was right in his sights and unfortunately they were no longer able to share their work and a few of the major projects got shelved. Again, a massive blow to my livelihood, we went on short time with some months only able to book less than 20 hours out of the 160 hours, promised and i was forced to go under debt review. When things got really bad, they threatened to 'lift' my vehicle which i had already owned for 2 years, previously, debt review was able to assist and they managed to make an arrangement with ABSA. But then things got really bad and my contract was coming to an end, i app**** for a 3 month payment break, which ABSA rejected. I still tried my best to make payments, even though there was very little or zero income. My last payment was in April but i missed, 4 months payments, to date. In that time, they were threatening me like crazy, they even contacted my 75 year old parents, even though i was staying in touch and trying my best to make a suitable arrangement but they wanted to hear nothing, demanding R22k immediately, even though i sent through proof that i was unemployed etc. I new in my heart that i would secure a new job and begged them to bear with me for a few months until i was back on my feet again. Thanks be to God, i managed to secure a new permanent job with a steady monthly income and started now in May. ABSA still refuses to make a manageable arrangement with me and are still threatening to take my car. I still have 61 more payments to make on this vehicle, my question, why is it so critical to spread the arrears over 3 months when I've owned the vehicle since 2022, still have 61 months to pay and have always made payments. I cannot understand the reasoning behind this, can you please assist? Lots of people are struggling but I'm always proving to them that I'm doing my best to stay afloat, in this time. They even mentioned that they will assist in selling the vehicle and i will be liable for the shortfall, how do i get to work. I know this is not the banks problem and i did sign a contract but where is the compassion, as i mentioned, my last payment was April 2025 and now i have a new job as well. ABSA mentioned, if they assist me, they have to assist everyone but does everyone have a job and more than willing to make an affordable arrangement for the arrears? Why can we not spread the arrears over a longer term so that i am still able to care for my family etc. Please ABSA, there must be another way?
Best regards,
