Absa throw customer under the bus

Yesterday, about 15:20, Absa sent an SMS to my mobile number; the actual SMS was addressed to my wife. In short, the SMS informed my wife that because there had been no activity on a savings account, in her name, that the account had been deactivated; whatever that may mean. To reactivate the account requires performing a transaction, for example, either a deposit or a withdrawal. The account is an Absa Active Save savings account. This is the first time in over 20 years of having this account that Absa has ever made reference to some veiled “3-month” terms & conditions that permit Absa to unilaterally “deactivate” an individual’s bank account that is FICA compliant (about March 2017 last) . Absa’s boorish SMS and brutish “deactivation” of a legitimate account, held by a by a historically disadvantaged individual (my wife) speaks volumes to us about how far we have come as a society. In short this is nothing less than disgraceful (our opinion). The account only has about R5000 in it and my wife deposits her hard saved money into the account as and when she can afford it. Is this how we, as honest and hardworking South African citizens, as long serving customers, deserved to be treated?

More telling is the fact that Absa still have the authority to “transact” on this account and deduct their monthly fees, so while they can still get their fees from MY MONEY, I have no access to my funds, what would happen in an emergency, simple throw the customer under the bus. We are not happy and will be taking this up with the Banking Ombud.
