ABSA "regrets your experience, but the bank cannot be held liable"

In a nutshell:

On 22 December 2018 I wanted to check the balance on an Absa account (a savings account I have been paying money into regularly for years, the card is in my safe) at an Absa ATM in Brooklyn Mall.

The card was swallowed by the machine. I was slightly baffled, but thought that it happened because the card was perhaps quite old, and needs to be replaced. Just to make sure that the card was not stuck in the machine, I inserted my Standard Bank Card, checked the balance, and retrieved the card. I was not worried, and thought that I would collect that card on the next working day.

When I went to the bank on 27 December, not only did I discover that the card was not there, but that R1000s were drawn on 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, and 27 December. The card was then stopped, and I was given a new card.

With reference to Absa's response when I opened a case, I confirm that: the card was not lost, ******, never used by anybody but myself (and on very few ossasions) and no pin number written on it. Neither was it with any identification documents.

I will not let this matter rest till I know what exactly has happened - with all the ***** and *******ion being exposesd in our country I trust no one, not even their encrypter system

The biggest mystery to me is "what happened to the card that was swallowed by the machine"???

Dear Basani - you can decide to assist me, or not. It is a choice you have. Quite frankly, as Rhett Butler says in "Gone with the Wind", I don't give a damn (anymore) I had a reply from your ***** division that stated: According to our records the card was not swallowed by the ATM and was possibly swopped before you concluded the transaction. I sent the following response: "Dear Sir there was nobody near me when I put the card in the machine. The card was never handled by anybody else but me. The card was swallowed by your Absa ATM. Check your CCV footage. How many times must I relay that I inserted my Standard Bank card after the ABSA card 'disappeared' into the machine and I was able to check a balance AND got my card back? Perhaps there is a Ghost in the Machine? I find your failure to understand what happened mind-bogling. This is not about the money (six thousand rands, although not much, is not to be sneezed at; I have been putting it away for my god-child for tertiary education) "When you get good service, you tell three people. When you get bad service, you tell eleven". I am sure that you have read this quote in business articles and books too. My family and friends with accounts at ABSA will all closing their accounts. But I suppose saying "your loss" doesn't mean anything to Absa. Au revoir Absa.
