Absa refusing to pay out my policy and dont inform you of the waiting period when selling the policy to you
I lost my mum a couple of years ago, and last year when the ABSA consultant offered me a funeral policy for me, my spouse and my dad, I agreed. The consultant said that the policy would be active in six months. This policy would assist me in burying my dad in a more dignified way than the standard policy he had taken out with a local funeral home for my mum and himself. So, when my dad passed away on the 7 of April this month, I contacted ABSA for a pay out, in order to begin funeral and burial arrangements. I went to the Phoenix Plaza branch, and the consultant placed me on a call to ABSA LIFE, the young man had conversed with the consultant for a few minutes, collecting relevant information about my policy. He then asked to speak to me (the policy holder) in order to verify my information. He told me that I did not qualify for a policy payout, as the policy was not yet a year old. This was a shock to me, as the consultant who offered me the policy did NOT mention this to me. The young man on the other end of the line, informed me further, that I could still send in the relevant documents for review, verifying my email address in which he would send me in formation on the necessary requirements thereof. After running around making copies of the Death certificate and our IDs, as well as getting together the burial order, I made a tedious trip to the police station to certify the copies, then filled in the claim form and sent the relevant documentation. No response from ABSA for over a week! By this time the policy had drawn out its 12th installment. i eventually visited the branch in the Bluff area and the consultant emailed all my documents. Later on that same evening, I received an sms from ABSA LIFE, stating that one of the pages was missing from the email sent. I took a trip to the Phoenix branch and the consultant there re-submitted my claim forms. I received a telephone call from an ABSA LIFE consultant a few days later, informing me that my claim had been declined.DECLINED! I could not understand. The lady went on to explain that the policy was not a year old, but that was not what I was told when I had initially taken out the contract. I refuse to accept such blatant contradiction from such a large institution and I demand that ABSA LIFE rectify this matter. I am not backing down, ABSA owes me monies to bury my father in a dignified way. I have spoken to many people, who have all told me that drawing a funeral policy from ABSA is not easy, the seem to constantly come up with excuses and refuse to pay their clients. ABSA needs to respond as to why I cannot bury my dad in a dignified way, because their consultant did not disclose to me that it would take a year for the policy to be active in my dad's case, instead of telling me that my policy would be active in six months. Please note it has been a year already and ABSA LIFE has NOT sent me a copy of the policy either.talk about being professional! My dad died on the 7th April, I went to the bank on the 9th of April to see if policy could be paid. An installment was still taken out on the 15th of April for him (after his death), but they don't seem to want to acknowledge that all installments were paid for a FULL year. Also, the terms of the policy (according to my fathers' age) was not explained to me upon signing and a copy of the policy was not sent to me at my home address, before claim was made. The consultants that I spoke to, at both the Phoenix Plaza and Cornubia branches, were also unaware of the 'waiting period for 'age' of life insured and the waiting period. So, this basically meant that the policy was being sold by consultants who weren't trained to do so.
