Absa Home Insurance Know your insurer and how they operate

I experieced a pipe burst in the bathroom last week at approximately 4am in the morning.

Stepping out of bed into ice cold water.

My immediate thoughts was the geyser had burst. I managed to get into the roof area where the geyser is installed but found the geyser in tact. I made my way to the bathroom and found water gushing out below the basin.

I immediately went to the municipal emergency shut off valve outside the house and found that the municipality had no tap handle fixed to it. I went back inside and found a spanner that barely fit to the external water meter shut off mechanism. In the meantime the house was filling with water and I could not cotrol the flow.

After about 15 minutes of struggle in the dark, I finally got the water shut off.

I called Absa Home Insurance after 9am to inform them of the unfortunate incident.

Absa managed to get a plumber out by 4pm the same afternoon. He photographed the damages and reported back to Absa , who immediately informed him that the incident is not covered and he should block off the pipes with blanks. He did so and left.

I received a call from Absa Home insurance the next morning stating that a rejection letter was to be emailed - Which after several days has never been received , and they also informed me that they will not process the claim due to the type of pipe that the builder had fitted 15 or so years ago. I understand that the pipes are not covered but waht about the laminated flooring throughout the home.

They have not been taking my calls ( 24 calls made in total ) and have since thrown a blind eye to my loss and my ****aged home.

Their service is undoubtedly putrid and they should step up to the plate when required to do so.

I demand some for of communication from them, my flooring has since the incident deteriorated and my calls to them are invain.

Can someone please assist me URGENTLY. Absa you have let me down terribly and I will never recommend you to anyone, as a matter of fact I will share my experience with everyone , so you dont get to dissapoint them as well.

I have employed an attorney to assist me , but she awaits a report from Absa as well as the reason for rejection, which is still forth comming.

Please Help ,

Just so everyone becomes aware - if your builder is fitting braided piping to your plumbing , please know that it will be a problem with your insurer , who at the time of the purchase of the home will fail to sit you down and discuss what is and isnt covered. Also know that 90% of the homes that I sell has these pipes fitted to their mixers throughout the house. So there is a lot of people out there that will be experiencing what I am.

Unfortunately for everyone , its the only piping I know that is freely sold by all hardwares when acquiring taps. Nothing else fits ( No other alternatives are available )

Absa I expect some form of respect and insist on communication from you.
