ABSA ERROR - MY NIGHTMARE (STILL)

Absa is costing me dearly every day and they just ignore me. Below is my original mail to them and after no reply I have written three more mails and visited the branch three times also without joy. This is to warn other clients of Absa disgusting behaviour. My letter below.

Hi there,

I wish to bring to your attention some rather confusing and concerning findings I've made in my bank statement.

I make reference specifically in this email to two errors on your part as I see it. The first being one whereby you apparently incorrectly charged the wrong amount for various withdrawals where you thought they were POS withdrawals when in fact they were ATM withdrawals. Im not certain how you got to your new amount to debit off my account or indeed how far back you went, but you did a Head Office "journal adjustment" of R170 you on the 16th of this month with the only reference being "SAS WDL FEE COR".

I see you did send me an SMS informing me of a correction in charges. I thought it would be in my favour, and I only received the sms yesterday the 17th July.

Furthermore, I not been aware of this as I was on a hike and this brought my account close to empty and causing me more issues as I tried paying for stuff and then incurred your R10 declined penalty. All this and notwithstanding that I had already been charged R455.50 in bank charges.

In summary, by no mistake of mine, have I been embroiled in your accounting errors and this in turn has not only cost me your correction fees and declined penalties, but also embarrassed me at a restaurant when I tried to pay and it was declined and also cost me time and last minute phone calls to people to assist me.

The second issue I have is that you keep on declining my payments when there is in fact funds available to cover the purchase. Once again, this causes embarrassment and I incur the R10 "declined" penalty. It's self evident that I am correct by just perusing my bank statement.

I am a new client of Absa and frankly like your initiatives but this issue has shaken my trust a little and I would like to see how it's dealt with here as I was an innocent bystander in this comedy of errors by Absa on my account. I would like for Absa to stand for its errors and return the Journal correction and also return all the incorrectly taken declined penalty fees it has taken. Then as a sign of good faith and as an apology, remove the banking fees and charges of R455.50, as clearly it was incorrect. "

Please take note of my last correspondence before posting to Hello Peter. I am not sure if you have viewed this. Please also advise on when I will have resolution on this matter.

* Last email before Hello Peter

To whom it may concern,
I have now been trying to get an answer on my email dated the 18 July 2024, with reference number: ***, for 2 weeks , with no joy.
I am a single man of 43 battling to survive in this country and though I wrote a most courteous email to the correct helpline, I have to date only received email responses from Absa stating they are trying to call me and cannot get through to me.
I live in a remote area with poor signal and for that reason I wrote an email and it's standard practice to respond to a email, with an email, but this seems to have been totally ignored by your helpdesk and the result being massive costs, contstantly deducted, without a care for your customer, who upon noticing a mistake on his statement, immediately alerted Absa helpdesk, but still to this day, not an answer.
My account is currently in -R138 and the declined fees just keep coming. I am unable to buy food or get transport and this problem starting from the 17th July with a Journal debit SAS reference has had a knock on effect leaving me completely in the dark and with no help from Absa.
I furthermore went to the Absa branch in person in Parow three times. Each time, turned away. Twice because the system was down and once because the consultant couldn't find this Journal debit which I told him occurred on the 17 July 2024.
So finally Absa has entirely hamstrung me and I now demand effective backdated closure of my account crediting all the declined fees, journal debits, monthly fees and service fees amounting to roughly R600 to the following account:
Tyme Bank***CM VILJOENREF:ABSA REFUND
Please take note of the urgency of this situation as I am now unable to eat or get to work, due to Absa's accounting or technical error. I have gone from a new and happy client to a hungry and angry one that, should this not be addressed immediately, will post it in Hello Peter and involve legal council as well as taking it further to the newspapers, as I believe there were a few complaints in this regard and all these clients are due these fees back.
All I want is what I have asked above and that will be the end, should you refund me immediately though.
Regards
Chris Viljoen

Mr. Ndou

It is now Saturday 10 August and though you have rep**** to me, I have no resolution and while you and your family enjoy a long weekend, I suffer under ABSA error.

I am surprised at ABSA's total lack of empathy on this error of theirs. What I asked for to finalise this matter was pittance, cause I'm hungry, but I now see ABSA's true colours and I'm disgusted! Shame on you and what goes around comes around.

Escalate.

So no payment was made by your cutbodf time of 7.15pm and no feedback by same time as promised also. So now it cost me an extra R150 at my accomodation as they refused to give me my monthly rate cause I couldn't pay it due to Absa's false promises.

Furthermore, I had to take a taxi to Absa ATM to check whether funds were In as my phone was ****** yesterday when all my baggage was removed from my accomodation due to non payment, this happening while I was at ABSA branch in Parow yesterday. After yesterdays disaster, my losses with phone ****** is now much higher and I don't have the money to buy another Samsung A24. Im distraught and frankly beaten down. I have no words for this total lack of empathy and care.

Hi Godfrey,

So here is where I am at. Ifbpayment reflects in my account today still, I will keep to our agreement. Should it NOT reflect in my account today, then as per my conditions stipulated in email containing agreement, that agreement will not be in force anymore, and I will lay out my entire case with costs to the ombudsman and escalate all social media angles at my disposal.

I have been treated badly here, and I'm very upset about this. Should you really want resolution here, speak to your boss and speak to the payment processing division.

Hi Godfrey,

Your responses which were parrot like identical each time to my numerous questions , now confirm to me what I suspected all along. That is that no matter what I said, you were going to do exactly what you wanted regardless of my issues or questions I was constantly raising.

Had you actually taken note of my messages, you would have seen that three messages back, I gave you a deadline to pay, failing which the agreement will no longer be in force, based upon the conditions I mentioned in the body of the email in which I returned the signed contract with to you.

Furthermore, the account was in negative -R138.00, making your deposit of R800 actually only R662.00. At the date of signature, I had accepted your offer with account being at 0 and payment occuring the same day. For me, the offer was acceptable and near enough to my losses.

However, from there, due to the length of time to make payment, it put me in a situation in which I was kicked out of my room where I stay, and my cellphone was ****** when I returned to my goods in a heap outside the property. I then was charged a higher rate also for daily rental now vs monthly rental.

Just these two factors alone cost me R4500 for cellphone and R550 for accomodation. Totalling R5050.00

I want to be reimbursed for these losses and will not stop until I have been reimbursed.

Chris

Hi Godfrey,

Unfortunately it was not dealt with reasonably and I continued losing and this waa caused 100% by ABSA's negligence. If ABSA had not erroneously charged me that special head office ß fee, which ironically, was caused by ABSA'S back office .
î
This fee pushed my account into negative figures and any cent that came offf my account, subsequently, was declined and charged a declined fee of R10 everytime. This allaffectikg me

This all affecting me very badly, causing me not to be able to pay my rent, then having my personal belongings thrown out my room while I was in the bank trying to sort this out. It was there that my phone was ******, a Samsung a24.

By my reasoning, none of this would have happened had Absa NOT made this mistake in the fi seerst place and for that reason do I i believe that must buy me a new phone or pay the money into my account.

Absa is a big financial institution, that can easily set this matter straight. Im not asking for one cent more than the damage caused by Absa.

I am also irritated that yoru, Godfrey, new how long this process would take and you decided to not tell me, but rather respond copy and paste verbatim each time. I know you knew how long it would take, because when I was in Parow branch of Absa trying to call you, the consultant at a stage came to me and told me that you told her that you don't phone or take calls from customers, and that it could take a week fory6yyyy66 Dr payment to be made -this you denied, but I know you did say this and I will get proof of this, as it has bearing on my acceptance mail.
