Absa charges to close bank accounts

I went to Absa bank Heidedal to close my account. You literally have ti wait an hour to get in because the branch consultants assist one client at a time. The lady that assisted me said that i had to pay an amount of R150 to close the account. I asked why and she said it’s because it’s a cheque account. I told her that doesn’t answer my question, why do I have to pay a fee to close the account. She then said it “might” be my monthly account fee and I showed her a positive balance on my latest statement so how can I be charged in advance? I want this account closed and do not want to be charged for it.
