ABSA charge transaction fees on suspended accounts
Due to financial circumstances, i've been under debt review for over a year. One of the accounts i am paying back is an overdraft at ABSA Bank. The original overdraft amount was R20,000. After paying R5,088 back, the outstanding balance is R22,856. It turns out that my repayment, as agreed between ABSA and my debt councilors is R348 pm. There is an account fee (for transactions) of R450 pm. At this rate, i am never going to pay back the capital amount. The account fee of R450 pm is the "unlimited transactions" fee of the account. I asked if i could downgrade the account to one where i pay per transaction, as i am not transacting on the account. I was told i can't and that i have to settle the account before i can change to a cheaper account option. It is a transnational cheque account. ABSA, how can you charge me account (transaction) fees for an account i can not use. I understand being charged interest etc. but not for transaction i can not make...
