Absa Bank & Telkom Mobile Sim Swap *****

Recently my father went on retirement, after working 40 years for Telkom .

In February this year, someone hacked his Absa bank account, and disabled his phone network, with Telkom Mobile.

They transfered 2 amounts to the value of R400 000.00 to a Capitec account.

He only discovered the transactions the day after they took place, as he went into his Telkom branch to get his sim card fixed which for some unknown reason had been deactivated. Only then did he notice his bank balance had dropped. Immediately he went to the bank to pull a statement and discovered the unauthorised transactions that had occured on his account.

A case was opened by Absa, the local police, and the Ombudsman.

He received hardly any case details or updates throughou the investigation, and had to chase up with all parties otherwise didnt receive any news.

Finally after 2 months of waiting and following up with them, Absa claimed the issue resulted on his end, and would only return half the money as it was not their fault.

Isn't your hard earned money supposed to be safe at the bank?

He has always banked with Absa, and this is how they support him?

If your bank account gets hacked without your knowledge, how are you supposed to do anything about ?

Is Telkom Mobile responsible as they allowed the unauthorised sim swap to happen?

Has anyone else had a similar case ?
