ABSA Bank - Persistent Gender **************
I app**** for a credit card, with ABSA, whom I bank with and my salary goes into the account. I was pre-approved and what remained was the identity confirmation, which was done, as usual, by phone. I do not think I am in any way entitled to being approved but it is the blatant and persistent way I have been treated, that is the problem. I have a masculine voice and understandably, often people think they are talking to a male, however, when I repeatedly have to ask the consultant to address me correctly and they repeatedly choose not to, that is insulting and degrading. This is compounded by the fact that when I was called to verify my identity, the consultant kept asking to speak to Ms Barrett, I kept saying that I am her and then, to find out that my application was declined due to possible ********** activity, not because ABSA informed me but because I noticed the letter of decline was from the ***** department and sorest about asking why. This resulted in me presenting myself, not once but twice to the bank to basically prove I was not lying. To compound the problem, did ABSA contact me to tell me there was possible ********** activity? Did they contact anyone else, listed on my application? Yet after presenting myself, with my ID and then having to re-install the app on my phone, I find out that the number registered for security, is the number I specifically went into the bank to change and have removed from my account, is still on my account. I then call the consultant this evening, only to be once again, repeatedly humiliated, told that my actual number is only listed as a contact number and therefore cannot change it unless I go into a branch, which ~I have already done, so I must be subjected to this as a result of someone else's incompetence AND be treated like `I am ********, humiliated and disrespected is not only disgusting, it is UNNACEPTABLE. I read recently that ABSA were targeted for being ******, well you can add gender ************** to that list and I will be contacting the necessary gender equality and Ombudsman as a result. I have cancelled my life insurance with ABSA and will be going in to the branch in the morning, not to verify who I am but to close my acount. The hypocrisy that a bank implies I was committing *****, is not only unbelievable but where enough is enough. Legal action is absolutely happening and I hope anyone else who has had any negative experiences does the same. Disgusted.
